Title: New plot advice
Post by: Suziet8 on August 31, 2015, 08:22
Have got another mini plot (silly me!!) and on this one the weeds were much larger than the other. OH cut them down then I applied weed killer, which seems to have done its job. Now we have started digging it over. Mostly the weeds were couch grass, mares tail and docks. Question is once turned over should I remove all the weed roots or will they rot down over the winter? Thanks

With those particular weeds I'd remove/burn them.

Mares/horse tail, will be a recurring theme I'm afraid, but if you were prepared to spray again in the spring you might get rid of the others without digging. Depending on the weather they might grow enough before the end of September for you to zap them again before winter. If it's not too big an area, mini plot, & you have the time I should do as mum says & start digging.

Remove the roots and plant a green manure if you are not going to put anything else in for a period so that the weeds have less chance of coming back, you have something to dig in to improve the soil and you have time to plan out just what you are going to do with the plot.
