I've just discovered some strawberry plants
« on: August 23, 2013, 09:03 »
- and I'm not sure what to do with them.

The ongoing plot clearance has revealed a few iffy looking strawberry plants (photos below). I don't know whether to leave them where they are and work round them, move them (is that feasible?) or just dig them up.

Any advice? (See, I told you all I was new to all this!)

Many thanks.

If you want strawberry plants for your patch you can dig them up and move them when they are in your way. I clean the roots and pot into compost, then into their final position, but I'm indecisive - you could also just shift them across. I would still clean off the roots and give sink the plants into some compost though, just to give them a treat and encourage a bit of growth before winter.

They are pretty indestructible, and I bet you could get free runners off neighbours in Spring too.

Thanks surbie100, I'll have a go at moving them somewhere a bit more useful. I've been told that the slightly suspicious looking mound at one end of my plot is where the original occupant had his compost, so once I get through the grass and weeds I may be able to use some of that.
