I've finally got round to clearing the rubbish on the decking outside my patio and kitchen, and upon removing a pile of bags and other soft stuff, revealed a hedgehog with babies (yes I have put this task off for a long time!). A sweet sight but a metre from my patio door is not a good place for them to be. For one thing, when I am taking veg peelings to the wormery in the dark, I might step on one. What is the best thing to do, let them be and hope they move on? I don't want to move them myself for risk of injuring them.

TBH, if it's not too late, I'd just replace the coverings that were there and let them get on with it, taking care to only go outdoors when you can see where you're putting your feet.

Thanks, I have put a bag of soft material back over them, and hope my disturbing them will encourage them to move somewhere more suitable.

I agree with Yorkie.    It is a charming picture, and I think you should be honoured to have such a lovely little family.    You'll have to use a torch by night, or wait until morning     Mrs Bouquet

Not so charming now. The adult has gone and two of the babies have been left behind. Unless the parent is coming back for them I fear they are doomed.

Three places I've been trying to get in contact with today and failed. It is the rammed full south east in overdrive again, sometimes it is impossible to do anything without being stuck behind other people.

Finally managed to get in contact with a nearby vet. They kindly agreed to take them in, they have a contact involved in wildlife rescue, so hopefully the two hoglets will survive.
