Anyone sowed their Leeks yet?
« on: January 28, 2007, 21:47 »
Hi Folks

I sowed a half packet of leek seed in a full seedtray today. Now I am wondering if I am too early? What do you do with the seedlings - transplant them into pots or just leave them in the tray until pencil size?

thanks

transplant to pots when about 2 inches tall  carefuly lift them from the tray soil trying not to damage the root system  2 inch pots are to small when the leeks reach 4 /6inches so put them in 4 inch ones plant out in april in well prepared bed for great bigguns  .leeks like a deep soil to get a  good hold in
still alive /............

Hi Folks

Thanks for all the replies.  Definitely seems as though you lot have two sowing times  - late Jan and March. So glad I have half a pack left to sow in March as well.  From what I understand I should then have, eventually, two lots of leeks in the plot which will mature at different times.  Sounds a good idea.

Thanks for all the help.

Being a complete novice and very eager I took the paket at its word. It said sow Jan/Feb indoors (Musselburgh) so 070107 saw a tray sown. They have been kept in a cool conservatory though and only popped up over the past couple of days. I too will sow more later and see what happens. I sowed them into a tray which has 24 modules (approx 2" square) and put one seed in each. They are all slowly germinating. Will I need to transplant again before they go outside or will they be ok now until they go out. I was intending transplanting them early may as per teh instructions on packet.

hi luke  :)
i find leeks get stunted in a tray if left to long they grow so big and thats it.so i try and transplant them outside in a bit of well prepaired(seedbed) soil,if the weather is still bad around april then put some fleece over them.bring them on here for a few more weeks until they are as thick as a pencil, once this size they are much easier to transplant into there final position in may or june
feed the soil not the plants
