Parsnips and manure
« on: October 18, 2008, 17:22 »
Hi All

I have applied manure this month to my 3 raised beds that I have built.

Just read that parsnips dont like manure .....So would it be better if I didnt bother planting any in the spring.....Or will It be okay ????

Thanks in advance for any replies

Root crops temd to like a soil that has been manured the previous year, or they 'fork' (some interesting shapes though!)
Id leave it for parsnips in the ground this spring but try them in containers

Well, if you like them I'd plant them anyway.

I doubt you would get much more forked ones than the avarage.

They taste the same, forked or not. 8)

ah but you cant peel em anywhere near as good!

I picked some that I had grown on the local community garden, and they were aliens! Seriously!  I had to compost 50% of some of them because they were so forked I couldnt clean them properly, so had to cut half off

I'm really, really doubtful, this has necessarily have to do with too much nutrients, which it can, but first of all in that case you get a lot of very hairy roots. :)

Trust me, I'm not a doctor. 8)

Very hairy is NEVER good! (shudder)

No manure is what Ive always been advised by everyone Ive ever read or spoken to, so whatever the reason, ill stick with the no manure and not TOO many stones (where DO they keep coming from!)  :D

This is one thing I remember from school.  Frost heave means that when there's a frost, the ice crystals in the soil force stones to the surface.  Hence they keep coming, year after year.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Whatever you are told forever is called brain washing, the truth is another issue.

I'm not saying here that roots need a rich soil, for clarities sake, but there are plenty other reasons they fork, most commonly so, too.
