Preferred onion sets
« on: February 22, 2013, 20:57 »
Hey there

I prefer to grow onion from seed but I'm running a bit late this year and, more particularly, we have an 18 month boy who loves nothing more than pulling things off any surface he can reach! My trays wouldn't survive his attention. I'm going for sets this year.

So, what are your favourite sets and where do you get them? In the past I've had good results from Stuttgarter something or other from Homebase/local garden centre but fancy something different. I'm looking for a nice oniony flavour with good keeping qualities.

Thanks in advance,

Az

Sturon have always been successful for me. They're usually available from Wilkinsons etc.

I usually get Stuttgart and one other and the 'other' this year is Sturon. Both are from the lottie shop. Good prices and always reliable.
I have my own cement mixer and not afraid to use it!!

I just saw all the info on onions here - I'll probably end up going for Sturon, Stuttgarter and some Red Baron.

Thanks for the answers.

I'll throw "Centurion" into the mix!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Golden Globe look nice too.

Choices, choices.

The trouble with the mail order places is that they (in my experience) send everything out on the late side. I'll have to get on the blower to some garden centres and see what's what.

Those are my staples too - the whites came from Wilkes and the red baron from the pound shop.  Classy girl you see!!

Like some of the others we usually go for Sturon and that's the sets we've bought this year. They seem to serve us well so that's what we've stuck with. We tend to find they keep very well too. We still have a fair few braids of them to go at in the shed.

We are also going to try Red Baron this year but have not, as yet, obtained the sets.

I went for Sturon, Centurion and Red Baron in the end.

Is it OK to leave sets out in the cold tonight?

I grew turbo for the last couple of years and they were excellent. Couldn't get hold of any this year though.

Sturton for me, grew them last year and chose them again this year
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength
