Blackcurrant bush pruning
« on: July 13, 2016, 18:47 »
Hi folks.  I have a blackcurrants bush in its 3rd summer with me, had it given so not sure how old exactly but it was a lot smaller then.  I have previously pruned in winter as the RHS recommend but this year it hasn't cropped so well.  It's pretty big and bushy and I see some sources recommend pruning now or September, taking out some of the older stems completely.  Advice please?

Prune the oldest branches down to ground level, then remove the oldest branches each year on a three year cycle. These should be the fruit bearing ones, some people prune out those branches with the fruit still attached and pick the fruit in a more comfortable position rather than leaning over the bush.

That's how I do mine. It's the easiest way to make sure you cut down the fruiting branches and leaving the new..and you're right it's far easier to get the berries off the branches when you are sitting down.  :)

That's the way we do it, Triki, and it's much easier too!

It's also nice to give some branches away to people, and also saves you having to pick theirs as well..;0)
