Flowering potatoes so soon?
« on: September 14, 2011, 22:23 »
I have planted 5 Charlotte seed potatoes in large pots with a view to having some fresh tatties around Christmas time. They were planted about about 7-8 weeks ago i reckon and have now filled the pots. The pots have been filled with a mixture of 75% multi purpose, and 25% horse manure compost. A small handfull of perlite was also added every time i topped up the pots. Yesterday i moved the pots to their home for the colder months in my greenhouse and i noticed that one of them has begun to throw up a flower bud.
Is this ok? seems a bit quick to me maybe?
Any advice on what to do?

Thank, Totty

Usually potatoes planted for a second crop are first earlies, so would be expected to flower quite quickly.

They need to make some potatoes while growing condtions let them and by mid/late autumn mainly won't have much more time left to them

The advise for Christmas potatoes is to plant them in late Aug and move inside before frost.
Yours should be ready early but you can just leave them in the pots untill Christmas.

I planted my Charlottes in mid July and they are flowering now. I will move them into the greenhouse next month before there is any frost. They are 2nd earlies so will probably still be at the 'baby' stage now and will need another month to get to a reasonable size. You could try having a furtle to see what size they actually are.

I reckon ill just leave them for now and snip the flowers off. Got paranoid about all the warm and wet weather brining some blight with it so have mine inside now. Fingers crossed.
