Un-pruned summer raspberry advice
« on: April 19, 2014, 14:57 »
Owing to illness, I never got my summer rasp canes pruned down last back end. Now I have a mix of old and canes. I think the older canes are more grey in colour but some do have leaves coming on them, though some leaves are only at the top of the canes. Apart from cutting off any canes that have no leaves showing, should I also cut off the canes with top leaves only? I also plan to thin any weaker ones out - does this all sound a good plan?
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I would have thought the new canes would have no side branches, whereas the  old ones will have side branches which they fruited on last year. I would prune out the weaker canes as well.

I'm fairly new to growing raspberries but last autumn I left a few of that years fruiting canes unpruned, by mistake. Those ones are showing no growth at all this year, whereas the ones produced last year are. They are tulameen.

If you can afford to lose the potential fruit on them, prune back but I wonder if they are this years fruiting stems.

Yes. And yes, I'd cut out the ones with the hairdo, too.
