Egg eating chickens!
« on: March 29, 2010, 21:59 »
Can anyone help please.  My three ex bat chickens have recently taken to eating there own eggs before I can get to them.  They have a large run with loose straw to scratch in and several things to jump up on to so dont think they are bored.  Any suggestions please

you have to get there first!  :)

Maybe they're laying softies but once the shells harden up they shouldn't get eaten  :)

Rubber eggs - worked with mine! And a lot less messy than the mustard filled ones you'll undoubtably hear about... Of course seeing their own eggs in the first place is a novelty for them as they usually roll away before they get the chance to see what happened!

Jo who I worked with had this problem, tried the rubber eggs, also tried the mustad and also tried hot chilli sauce but the girls loved this more than the egss!! Anyway the only way she has stopped this is to use a roll away nestbox and it has worked a treat.

Thanks for advice on egg eating chickens - I have had them for nearly two years and they have only just started the egg eating.  Have tried the rubber eggs and this stopped it for a while but they are back on it again now!  Like the idea of blinkers which I picked up from the site - does anyone know where you can get them?  Will try the mustard anyway - thanks for the tips!!
