Title: SLUG DETERRENT
Post by: davidevans on March 11, 2006, 11:21
Hi
Dont know whether I'm going slighty mad here but interested to hear if anyone has thought of or tried the following slug deterrent?

Ive just built my first 5 square foot bed but have read that slugs climb into these and eat the plants its about 8inches high. I was thinking could i not nail carpet tracking (the strips with tacks in) to each side low down as other remedies suggest sharp surfaces as a deterrent. It does sound a bit viscious but who likes slugs anyway  ?

That sounds a good idea, I know you can buy a copper tape to go around pots. Apparently it gives them minor electric shocks. This sounds like it will help but there are probably eggs in your soil, which will hatch out .
I'm afraid slugs and gardeners is a war that is never won - at least by the gardeners!

I amnot sure whether sharp things deter slugs - I think it's more rough surfaces but i would like to hear how you get on.

I have used copper pipe fixed round the raised bed and it works but is obviously expensive unless you can find a second hand source.

good luck
