Just found some CONTROL FABRIC MATTING - 1 x 100m 50gsm = 100 sq m for £30 is this good?
-
Where'd you find that? Can you link it?
(I'm local to you btw)
-
I think the one you mentioned is too lightweight - weeds will grow under it and through it.
You should aim for woven plastic around 100g / m2
Horticultural suppliers have it under the name of Phormisol or Mypex or their own brand
Some builders merchants have the same stuff as Terram ( although this used to be the white non-woven one )
You can get rolls up to 5m wide which make it so much easier to cover a plot
Price will be around £120 for a 4 x100m roll but lasts for years and could be split with others

if you can't be bothered with the big builder's stuff (and I think I might get some for myself...) screwfix.com have 2mx50m for under £40... not tried it yet but looks OK from the tiny pic on website

it's not really builders stuff. It's horticultural, black plastic woven sheet mulch. Tenax red stripe is another brand. I got some from Allplas (or all Allplas) and SmithnJones on the internet :)

Hi,
Someone is selling Weed Control Woven Membrane 100gsm 1x 100m on ebay
£28.19 including postage which i think is not a bad price when you compare to some sites
-
on Kay's horticultural website they have 'heavy duty' but say it doesn't fray... that's the worst thing about the woven stuff... anyone tried it?

I've had good stuff from eBay called "Weed control fabric" - I swear by it and it's cheap.
*&!£%^&!!£ Weed Control Fabric! I say... :tongue2:
-
chrisb1357, bear in mind that ebay fabric is only 1 metre wide ... going to get annoying laying that down.
-
The supplier I used has varied widths. I but 1.5 m wide as it suits the widths of my beds but he does 2m wide also :).

On our plots we use black polythene builders membrane which is used for damp proof ,it is 300 microns thick, will last for years and is available from builders merchants at a cost of approx £40 for 4mts x 25 mts.It is made by Visqueen building products.
-
cardboard=free?
-
I'd wondered about using the Visqueen sheet as there is a big bit of it at my mum's but wasn't sure about depriving the soil of air and moisture - but it's obviously woring for some...

Munroes in Cornwall sell mypex on the roll and at a fraction of the cost you will see in shops
contact details:-
J.F.C Monro Horticultural Supplies Lawnmowers & Garden Equipment
Tel: 01736 755766| Guildford Road Industrial Estate, Hayle, Cornwall TR27 4QZ
know they deliver some places but not sure how far up country or if it is just cornwall - however they may be able to network you with someone local to you? Mypex is great, allows moisture through and can be cut so that you can grow in it - strawberrys etc!
-
I just got a 1.5m x 5m roll at poundland :)
-
Someone on my allotment site has kindly gave me a roll of black sheeting that is not to think but about a 300m role of it and it should be good for temp weed cover until i can afford anything else later on.

Is it any good? I was in there today, had a look at it and it looked as thoughit was going to be as thin as tissue paper.

what about the impervious membrane in the Ramco stocks? http://www.ramco.co.uk/currentstock.php and scroll down to impevious membrane.
I think I will get some myself... and maybe a helicopter simulator as well!

I wouldn't bother with the helicopter simulator if I were you, I got bored of mine very quickly. I've exchanged it for a STOTHERT & PITT 20 TONNE TRAVELLING DOCKSIDE CRANE, you can have much more fun with that.

Is that like one of these? :D
