Aubergine-less aubergine
« on: August 04, 2009, 09:21 »
Got an aubergine going great in the greenhouse, maybe as many as ten flowers on, looking really good, but no sign of any aubergines yet!! Ive even tapped the flowers to encourage pollination. This is my first time (with anything!) so Im not entirely sure what it should look like as it develops. Does it need pinching out to encourage it to set fruit? And if so how much? Thanks!!

In the greenhouse you might want to use a soft brush to cross pollinate the flowers, I did and it worked.
It's all too much!

You could try pretending to be a bee, using a small soft paintbrush to transfer pollen from one flower to the middle of another  :D

Yep, poke them little lilac babies with a brush. This is my third year trying aubs and last year i had one fruit that was 2" long. Hardly a 'ratatooey'!

This year i poked, but i've also been misting with water every time i'm in the greenhouse and i have a 4"er and a 1"er and a couple of other hopefuls. ( I have 4 plants)

Some say to only let 5 fruit per plant, pinch out the extras if you get that far.

Good luck. They are not easy.
Liv.

Hey, congratulations Norfolk Turkey!

I've got a little tiny aub on mine too - am ridiculously proud and have named him Aubrey  ::)

I didn't think I'd get anything at all as the plants are outside, not under glass.  And this is also my first year at growing veg too.

I hope we both get more fruits to follow the first ones, but, like you say, it's any success that counts!  I don't care if mine doesn't become more than a mouthful!
"Perhaps we could just dig up that bit of lawn......and plant more veg?"
