Compost Ingredients
« on: May 28, 2009, 23:31 »
I've asked a mate of mine who runs a fruit&veg stall to save all the old rubbish stuff that he would normally throw away.(for composting).
I said i'd take everything ,but he was a bit dubious  about oranges &other citrus fruit. Can i use everything on the compost heap?
 Cheers.

Depends how much cirus fruit you are eating, if its a load then the worms wont like it, but thats unusual for most people

I do the same as CQ, everything gets chucked in there...lint from the tumble drier...hoover bag...loo rolls....anything that will rot and isnt dog/cat poo or cooked food

I'd put anything in that has lived, plant or animal. If you run the heap correctly it will break it all down. The acids in the citrous fruit will be broken down, as will most chemicals (aminopyrilid is one nasty exception). Worms will move to the part of the heap that suits them. Animal remains cooked or not might need a wire mesh to stop four legged thieves, but they will compost.

There is a general disapproval of the use of carpets to cover plots, because of all the materials that don't get broken down, and so this means the stuff the hoover gets, likewise the stuff from the washing machine and tumble dryer that isn't wool, or cotton, or linen.  So  I wouldn't put that in.

If you put large amounts of vegie matter in, you need to balance it with rotting sawdust or cardboard etc.

I am sure its because of the toxins in it

I put citrus in mine, nothing cooked just raw, plus paper, cardboard, guinea pig bedding and rabbit poop  :)

No dog or cat poo because of the risk from parasites such as worms.

Definately no cat or dog poo, but if you have either, I think you can get composters specially designed to deal with it?

On citrus fruits - the problem as discussed is the acidity, if there is loads of its ( which is entirely possible from a fruit & veg stall) you could always add some lime to reduce the acidity.

We tend to struggle finding enough 'browns' to put in to be honest, so I personally would cautious about accepting extra 'greens'.
