Where and when to start this year...
« on: February 12, 2013, 15:59 »
Hello, this will be our 2nd year on the allotment but unfortunately last year we were unable to get to the plot to dig it over and get it ready for winter before the frosts came and the ground became inpenetrable.

I'm wondering where and when we start this year to get it ready for planting.  Most articles i read advise of what to do in autumn but obviously this has passed and spring is around the corner!

I am very much a novice at this and would be extremely grateful if anyone had some useful hints and tips to share...

 :)

start clearing and forking over or digging as soon as weather and soil allows ;)

I'm about to enter my fourth year on my plot. The main resolution I have for this year is not to start off the tender stuff too early. Although it is really tempting having all these lovely looking packets of seeds in front of you, it's freezing cold out and I am still getting the thoughts in my head of..."just plant the squashes etc up in early March to get them going as I'm sure we will have an early summer this year!". It ain't going to happen and you just end up with a load of dead or extremely shocked young plants. So as someone still classed as a novice that is the only bit of advice I can pass on.
