Making a cold frame
« on: April 29, 2012, 15:12 »
On my plot there are around 25 old bricks and an old double glazed unit. Could I put the double glazing on the top of the bricks to make a cold frame or do I need to leave a gap for the air to get in? Also could it be placed below a large fern or is lots of light needed
All the way from my allotment in beautiful Derbyshire. I'm in year 3 of my allotment and wish I'd caught the bug years ago, things growing from strength to strength

Light would be better, also if you just pile the bricks up and place the glazed unit on top there will probably be sufficient air movement. :)

Was just planning on brick on brick pilled up so could be taken down. Does it have to be higher at the back

You'll have air movement then. :) They are usually higher at the back, even just slightly.

A lot of them show the top open but the unit I have is really old and heavy and would not be able to be lifted is that essential

From the way I am envisaging what you have there, I would have thought you could prop it in some way or just slide it over to leave a bigger air gap. :)

25 bricks! I may be over analysing here but would that  be enough to make a useful sized structure?

They were all dug out of the plot and the double glazed unit is large so was thinking two bricks high at front and three at the back

Do you think the double glazed unit will allow the sun's heat through to benifit the plants ?      Cheers,     Tony.
