leeks

good afternoon,

just been for a wonder round the local garden center and a guy i got talkin to in there said i need to cut the tops off of my leeks to help them thicken out and to prompt new groth, does that sound right? i had only heard of cutting tops off when you re-plant thin out etc.

is there anything i should be doing to them apart from weeding?

also done some hand weeding this morning round mine and one seams to have a flower type thing on the end of a long stem, does that need pulling and scraping now? and if so what would of caused it to do that?

i dont bother with the cropping leaves etc .i just give them somepotash n sulphate of ammonia . 1/2 teaspoon of each . werks for me .. and as te flower one is going to seed .. eat it

would it do much harm triming the leafs? there are a few thats got mild rust. i know its not anything to worry about as they get removed.

i went the garden center and totaly forgot to look for some of that stuff, infact thats what i went for :roll:

no it wont if they have rust or frost damage on the tips ,

About your flower head ...

At one of the plots that I share, my friend sowed his leek seeds very early and planted them out well before anyone else. When I eventually brought my leeks to the plot to plant out, they looked pathetically weedy in comparison to his. I thought I'd left it too late

However, my leeks are fattening up quite nicely now

and are on target but nearly all of his leeks have bolted and flower heads have appeared on all of them. The combination of varying weather (warm spring, cold wet summer, warm autumn), and the sheer length of time growing, basically I think his leeks are doing what nature intended - producing flowers for the next generation right on schedule.

ive just pulled it, i think it was one of the thinnest ones out of the whole lot, fingers crossed for the others!

I'm not trimming mine off - they are the smartest looking plants on the plot at the moment!

i don't chop my leek tops - never had - and i like them young and slim - more intence flavour - i've started pulling mine already - very tasty indeed
