Rasp canes not established
« on: September 28, 2010, 20:38 »
Put in ten bare root Glen ample rasps last autumn. I think I did two things wrong: didn't have time to prepare the ground as well as I would have liked ; and threw some spare broadbeans between the canes in spring. Basically only two have shown (weak) growth the rest haven't done anything. Should I give up and replant or give them another year?

They will probably have forgiven you for not doing great soil preparation, but they will have HATED the competition from the broad beans.  They need LOADS of water while they are establishing and the beans are better at grabbing the water than the raspberries are.

Glen Ample is a summer raspberry so don't prune them, except take the height down to about 5 ft and tie them to your supports.  Give them lots of top dressing and keep them well watered during next spring.

Replant the ones that have died though ;)
