lily beetle
« on: May 24, 2012, 20:08 »
Aargh! >:(  My first time with the blighters and they're having a wonderful time with my flower garden

I planted it last year close to the veg baskets to attract beneficial insects and now I've got these "leetle red tings", chewing my lilies and lupins!!

Do they eat other flowers or worse, veggies, (which don't begin with "L")? ;)

I'm normally quite humane, but these have just found my wellie on top of them >:(

Oh dear  :( , happy stamping  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I love lillies but the last 5 years they have been decimated by beetles so no more lillies for me. :(

I do regular, several times a day visits to the lilies, and remove the little red so and sos carefully and commit them to the hereafter with my hard shoe soles.

I start at about 7:00am, and that gets the early morning hatched newbies

I have 2 clumps of lillies, only a metre apart, one orange and the other yellow. The orange variety is attacked every year whilst the yellow one is left alone!  Don't know why?

Although I have very few lillies 10 at most I sent 6 of the blighters to the beetle afterlife on Saturday, followed by 8 of their little red friends on Sunday.

I have a five year old nephew who has become very useful at spotting and killing the little beggars.

As well as crushing the beetles (score - 38 0n ours so far this year but none for the last week, so here's hoping!!) if  you see blobs of reddish black on the leaves, these are hiding the larva - they hide themselves in their own poo - and must be taken off, preferably wearing a plastic glove, and demolished underfoot.  Hope this is not too late.

no lily beetles for me this year - cos there's no sign of my lillies! I think 2 bad winters in a row did for them. I must remember to order some more - but looking through the brochures is soooooo dangerous
