found a couple today whilst raking some soil over after going over it woth the rotivator  . . . . near as big as a ten pence piece andthey seemed to be buried down about 4 to 6 inches, this one was quite active but the others we found were more dormant  . . . .

that was upside down after it fell off the stick i got it to crawl on so i could move it . . . . .. . .

I think it is a cockchafer beetle.  See http://www.kendall-bioresearch.co.uk/beetle5.htm

I reckon a chafer grub as well - first time I saw one I thought a horror story was unfolding!! - You can get nematodes to 'get' the grubs before they become beetles - as they can eat roots etc

So it looks  like it. Wow, I haven't seen one in the UK!

Used to collect them in plastic bags as children and were let to stay up late in the summer, when they were swarming and set on them with badminton rackets...Ah, memories.

i googled chafer beetle and came up with some gardening websites selling stuff to eradicate them  . . . .  dont think we've got that many  . . . . . i'll only be able to tell properly when i've turned the rest of the soil over i suppose.

big ugly thing either way lol   apparently they feed on the roots of grass and plants and turn yer lawn yellowy in patches so after all this effort i don't  think i'll be ' saving ' any more i find and moving them nicely on a stick lol  . . . . .

On warm summer evenings when there were a lot of insects and moths flying round I used to keep my kitchen light on and leave the door open to encourage them inside so we could look at them .We used to get some very pretty moths and quite a size. One might something was banging very noisily against the window and as I opened it this huge flying Maybug ( cockchafer) came through. In their insect state they are magnificent things. Dont see too many round here now but we put it in a box to show the kids in the morning then let it go.
Oh for those halcyon days of England long ago
