Peas and lettuce for fish????
« on: June 27, 2010, 16:24 »
One of our local garden centres has an enormous section of and for animals.
On one of their fish displays it had some information about them and one bit said 'the fish love to eat peas and lettuce'.
The fish in the tank were mainly goldfish.

We have 5 minnows in our tank (and lots of tiny snails   ;)). Is it true that they'd be able to eat peas and lettuce? Is there anything else they'd be likely to eat?

Thanks  :)

Hi, Minnows may be a bit small for a whole pea but larger fish will take them.
I keep Discus and they eat Beefheart Garlic Mussels, peas are good for digestion.
Many cat fish will eat a bit of cucumber.

If you have a spare tank full of water add some lettuce leaves and you can breed some daphnia (water fleas) which the minnow will love. :)

A large plastic water cooler bottle with the top cut off would be ok for flea farming. :)

That's a good idea  :D.
Are they likely to sell daphnia at the garden centre in the fish section?
I don't know anything about daphnia, so don't know where to get them etc.  :)

Hi

The fish shop may have live daphnia from time to time.

Make sure it's swimming around, if a pink mass in the corner of the bag, then it's probably dead.

Another thing is brine shrimp. You can buy the eggs in the aquatic shop, put salt water in a pop bottle, add an airstone & the eggs. Wait a few days, strain them from the saltwater & add them to your freshwater tank (no salt water) & they won't last long.  :D

Sometimes sold as "Sea Monkies" for kids to hatch.

Great, thank you very much spottymint  :). We're going to our local garden centre later today to buy another live plant for the minnows, so will see if they have any brine shrimp  :).

Fish like to nibble lettuce (unless they are total carnivores of course) A quick dip in boiling water and a dunk in cold makes it easier for them to eat  :)
