Title: J Collis Browne's mixture...
Post by: Growster... on March 08, 2018, 12:17
Has anyone noticed that this is a bit rare at the moment?

Even Boots can't get any, and our local chemist has been out of stock for ages!

It's great stuff, and we usually have a bottle handy...

Showing my ignorance - what is it and what does it do?

Ha, yeah I thought it was some compost blend hitherto unknown to me  ::)

It appears to be a lovely mixture of morphine and peppermint oil for the "relief" of diarrhoea and upset stomachs. I assume it is like the Kaolin and Morphine mixtures that pharmacists dished out?

I think once upon a time it was known as 'chlorodyne', which was a wonderfully, um, warming concoction that my mum was strangely rather fond of.  ::)  ;)

It then became only available in a considerably more neutered version as J Collis Browne's mixture several years ago, but these days I keep a packet of cheap generic Loperamide for the rare occasions the need arises - works just as well, but with no morphine content not even half as enjoyable to take!  8)

Considering its active ingredients, it is no wonder you can't buy it nowadays  ::)

Yes, it's the stuff alright!

The best thing it does is actually make your insides feel warm, which helps any stomach bug considerably!

I know where there is one bottle... It's down in a few feet of water by the towpath in Beccles on The Broads, as I dropped it there when on holiday in 1984! Mrs Growster was furious as it's not cheap!

None round here though!
