Help, hens pecking at hens bottom
« on: September 04, 2009, 21:18 »
Hi, can anyone help, a couple of months ago i had to move one hen out of the hen house as she was being picked on, she now has her own house and run, to day i noticed that one of my other 5 hens didnt want to come out of the house for her tea, she was standing on top of the roof of the nest box panting, when she did venture out the others started pecking at her bottom, i have taken her out and creamed her and put her in the shed for the night, what will become of her will i have to have yet another house built, or will she be able to go back in with the others? the others have scraggy necks, is this because of the moult? im a bit disapointed as ive had these hens for 14 months and they were always a friendly bunch. Hi Dizzylizzy, thank you for your reply, i dont know if she has a prolaspe, im not sure what im looking for, and i keep an eye out for lice etc and treat them, her bottom looks a bit sore and wet i put some cream on and she is now in the shed for the night, dont really know where to go from now, but will think about it again in the morning, and maybe ill have some more info by then, Thanks

Apart from being feather plucked does her vent area look swollen or have any flesh protruding from it?
Staffies are softer than you think.

hi Joyfull, thanks for your reply, last night her bottom looked swollen and there was redness, there was also a few drops of what looked like water on the floor where she was standing, i put her in the garden shed for the night, this morning it looks better its not like it was yesterday, im keeping her in the shed untill to night, when its dark i will pop her up with the others and see if they leave her alone

Have you felt to see if she has an egg stuck? Never had to do this myself so somebody on here will be able to advise regarding this.

I would follow foxys advice and pop her in a warm bath, the clear liquid sounds like it could be a broken egg leaking out. joy xx
