moulting hen
« on: December 30, 2008, 21:04 »
I have been really unwell for about 7 weeks, now am feeling a little stronger, went out to see my girls two days ago, and my rescue hen had a very tousled breast!  then today, I found LOTS of feathers that were not there yesterday, some quite long ones, in the henhouse and a few outside.   She seems happy enough, does not appear to be upset by her friends, a laying black rhode and a silkie... surely she cannot be in moult at this time of year??  she has not laid any eggs for a few months but I think she is quite an old lady now.   Really worried about her... any help will be appreciated!

A couple of mine have been really really slow going through the moult this year. A couple still haven't got their new feathers
Or, could someone be having a go at her?
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most!!

One of our older Goldlines is just getting her head feathers back.  She looks really weird, all spiky!  I think someone else menined their chook was moulting now too, so wait and see, if she seems okay in herself well......

I did wonder if my little silkie could be "having-a-go" but I've been watching them, all seems to be fine with them.  I have hung a new cabbage and a carrot and put a couple of apples in their run and they all seem to get along just fine!

Thank you for your input.   I have been so worried, don't think I could have slept thinking my girl was being bullied in bed!!!  I will keep a good look-out and see how she goes on.

Can they have a part moult? one of mine lost a large number of feathers 3 weeks ago but has not lost many more since?

She needs to pick up her game as her sister is taking all the attention.
