carnivore chooks
« on: June 08, 2009, 12:41 »
Please could anyone tell me whether it's ok to feed layers cooked meat scraps. The book I've got says no but other chicken keepers seem to do it! Poultry do eat "meat" when free-range (slugs worms etc) and I wondered if there was a specific reason for no meat scraps other than attracting vermin. Does it spoil them? Does it upset their digestion? Thanks alot.

I have been told not to feed them meat or salt as this can turn them cannibal. But mine do eat frogs and mice when they catch them.

like you say everything tells us not to do it and i don't , but i do know people that feed them all food scraps including meat and their hens are no different from mine .
so in all honesty i don't think it will harm them if its occasionly fed with other scraps of your leftovers.

plus the fact if they are ill people advise cat food to help them (probably not chicken variety though  :D)
Staffies are softer than you think.

Thanks all.  You would've thought eating raw meat would be worse for cannibalism but as Roughlee says free-range chooks eat it naturally!!! So why is cooked meat a big no....could it be the dreaded salmonella?

I give mine cat & dog food (for a boost), they like ham, cheese, tuna, fish, eggs (mixed with something else). Mine will basically eat anything, kitchen scraps. Not much goes to waste. I can't eat a muffin alone without half of it disapearing! Good for the waistline tho!

I think the reason behind why you're not encouraged to feed them meat is the Scrapie/BSE outbreak. Ie - feeding animals their own kind! ? causes disease's in those animals etc. There is probably some info on DEFRA'S site.
