Cooking for ten people - help please!
« on: September 27, 2010, 18:25 »
I am not the greatest cook in the world but I am trying and since being on here I am getting better!  I recently became a Grandma and, of course, the family are all itching to come and see the wonderful Oliver.  For example, next Saturday, including me, I will be cooking for 10 people.

Can you give me any suggestions as to what I can make for that many people, easily, quickly and cheaply!

Everyone loves shepherds (or cottage) pie(s).  You can even cook and assemble them the day before and finish off in the oven on the day - Only veg to do then.

Can't top Aunty's suggestion for easy, quick and cheap.  Lots of cheesy mash on top and make it the day before.  Perfik.
Cheese makes everything better.

Certainly anything with mince in it.  Chilli / ordinary mince - with jacket potatoes or lots of rice.  Can cook for hours on & in the stove once you've chopped everything you need, doesn't cost much, and can be reheated too.

Don't forget that the initial cooking will take longer if you're doing it all in one big pot.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You are both welcome, as long as you do some of the cooking

I like the idea of a shepherds pie, have done chilli/spaghetti before when having a few over but never thought of that.  I still have some potatoes in pots at the allotment too so could use those up.  Could do that with a selection of veg too.  Only problem is my daughter who doesn't like potatoes, but I could leave some of the mince out for her, or do her a bolognese or something.

I like HFW slow roast shoulder of pork.  Its a great lump of meat but it is so delicious and you can freeze in portions to use later any that is left over.

Its in the oven for 24hours and the smell of it cooking makes everyone drool.  Your would still have to cook  the veg on the day but if they are ready to go on its easy, and boy what a meal

Chili on a baked potato and cheese on top is also tasty.  Easy portion control too.

I'd recommend chicken breasts wrapped in streaky bacon - sorts out portion control! Minimum prep and can sit in fridge overnight before cooking.
Plan B would be Shepherds pie. Put lots of veg in. Makes it go further!
