Cleaning velvet or similar materials.
« on: October 02, 2023, 09:34 »
I need to clean the velvet or whatever it is on my Gillow's stool and am unsure it's the original fabric - probably not. I also have a small bedroom chair with a similar material.  Anyone know the best way to do it and what to use?

I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Good morning Goosegirl,
I have seen an article where the cleaner wrapped Selotape around their hand and dabbed off the surface fluff.  But how to do a deeper clean, I haven't got a clue. ;)

Cheers,  Tony.

Velvet upholstery is quite difficult to clean.  Brush as much of the dust out as you can.  I would use a soft brush like a gents shaving brush or a pastry brush. If it’s very dusty catch the brushed out dust with a vacuum cleaner nozel… don’t vacuum the velvet itself.

Make up a solution of washing up liquid and use the suds and your fingers to very gently moisten the velvet.  Blot it dry with clean cloth… DO NOT RUB. Work your way over the velvet adjusting your technique as you see how it works.  DON’T over wet the velvet.

Thanks AS. Not sure if it's velvet or velour but will use the technique you've recommended. Like the sound of using fingers covered in foam then massaging the material. Must remember to make sure it's dry before I sit down on it!  :tongue2: Does it work with people??
