Messed about with Christmas food
« on: December 02, 2020, 17:52 »
You know the stuff I mean?  Odd flavours and mixtures of stuff that just sound wrong, but every year the shops are full of it.

At work we always have Matchmakers in, but this year, as well as the usual orange and mint, we have gingerbread ones - wrong!  Gin and tonic After Eights - wrong!  We even have pigs in blankets with Carolina Reaper chillies - now why would you want them

Now you are all going to say that sounds delicious and I’m being phobic   Last year we had Marmite sprouts and I pulled faces at them.  I  do like Marmite, but on sprouts!!!  They sold like crazy

I thought it was me.  Matchmakers are mint. Marmite goes on toast or crumpets.  I think it's change for change sake rather than anything else.  Saw mince pies with all sorts of stupid flavours.  Husband saw mince pie flavoured sausages, am arranging counselling!

Chicken doughnuts are the most revolting thing I've heard so far this year.  Why would you do that?

Can I come to the counselling please.   I actually bought some ginger flavoured matchmakers.   They were horrid, I shall stick with mint flavoured.  Has anybody seen chocolate oranges, I love those ?     Mrs Bouquet

Mrs Bouquet you are more than welcome, we have chocolate oranges for you to nibble on.  I buy them each year for my kids but they don't like them so am forced to eat them myself.

Copied New Shoot's opening words onto another forum I'm on. Up came the forum's techie with the following memory

"Waitrose have a bit of history with this sort of thing, mostly because for a few years they've partnered with Heston Blumenthal to make a range of (expensive) weird Christmas "treats" (definitely needs the quote marks round that word!). Things like bacon flavoured trifle, Christmas puddings with whole oranges hidden inside them, fig flavoured cheese cakes that looked like they were covered in ash, etc, etc.
Thankfully they still had "normal" stuff so I could scoff mince pies that tasted like, well, mince pies, rather than ones with pine scented sugar dusting that smelt remarkably like loo rim block"

Yep I sort of remember some of those things appearing in various social media and on radio.

We had them, but I think they have sold out as I have not seen them for a while.  We do have a proper chocolate orange bar in amongst the choccy bars, so I would investigate there Mrs B.   In our shop it is sitting on the shelf near the bourneville and other slightly less run of the mill chocolate  :)

Wasn't there a sort of HP sauce flavoured baked bean once?

And Mrs Growster and I fight regularly when we discuss the various merits of Heinz and others... (3-2 in extra time, but I'm not sure who won)!

I used to like Crosse and Blackwell beans because a favourite aunt used to serve them up, but the Branston ones look quite good!

Anyway, on topic, years ago, long before we were married, my whole family came down with howling colds on Christmas day, and we finished up with boiled eggs on Boxing Day! They were absolutely marvellous!

(And who fries Christmas Pudding these days)?
