A whole new world
« on: May 23, 2020, 19:32 »
Hello everyone,
Brand new here, and so glad to have found this forum.
I've been having a scroll threw and wanted some advice!

So we are looking at introducing a small flock to our home (3-4 chucks)
And hoping to be able to convert our unused playhouse to a coop.
And building a run to attatch.

Is this practical and okay for a small flock? I'm planning on putting in a perch (right or not?) just remember my father having a perch in his chicken coop. And adding a couple of laying boxes, (inside or out?)

Thanks in advance 😊

I think that is a would-be palace for a few chucks  :)  They will want perches inside and the nest boxes could be inside or out.  In a small coop they are outside so it is easy to get the eggs without opening the whole coop up, but you could easily have them inside.

As well as all the stuff on the forum, there are also loads of articles on the main site here :

Did you buy this? Would love to see it kitted out for chickens.

We are currently looking to replace our coop with something bigger better and shiny :)

Hiya no, it was actually left with the house when we brought it! (very kind of them!)
My children NEVER use it.
I fostered hedgehogs for a while so was used to house them.  :)
But now we are going to turn into a coop!
My only worry is that it is ground level.
But I am currently digging around the outside and placing bricks and wire mesh to stop any rodents burrowig underneath!

Looks like it is on slabs, but you could lift it up with a pole to check underneath.
If slabbed, the take the slab width  out by at least on all the way on 3 sides.
Buy weldmesh, you will need it to be attached to the back of the house (keep things getting in that way. Can also do that on the sides.
On the front I would use metposts with posts at least 6ft and attach weld mesh up and on top.
I would make perches with a box shape with perches spanning the gap. You could also make a nest box with open sided box with newspaper and straw inside. I would keep food and water in the porch and I use a washing up bowl on bricks for water

xx
