I feel your pain, it's what I always used to buy.
I think they decided they could make more money selling it as a joint  :(

marmalade now its collar bacon now i am getting hungry we usually buy cooking bacon these days its cheep and cheerful don't eat as much bacon as i used to try to balance my breakfast nowadays

but i still like a bacon butty now and again we used to buy streaky bacon for cooking and  as a joint for boiling and slicing but you can only buy that at one butchers and that's a little way from us its  not available as a joint at the supermarkets  morrisons still sell bacon shanks or hocks as i  call them they make a nice meal with a few home grown broad beans

we used to have home cured bacon years ago bacon flitches hanging on the wall sometimes a little on the fatty side it didn't need any lard to cook it straight in the pan it mad its own fat if i gave that to my kids when they where growing up years ago they would have definatly thrown up

but a bit of fatty bacon never harmed me nice piece of home baked  bread dipped in the fat yer don't know your born till you had a slice or two of home cured bacon  if we had that today it would probubly come with a health warning from the nannies  :lol:

I think you're right Mum. There's only 'streaky' or 'back' available, with a few variations on curing - and cost of course!

We often bought 'through-cut' in the past, as you had the best of both worlds too!

Although it's not bacon, our Waitrose/Tesco both sell prepacked gammons which I carve up after cooking, and that really is a saving compared to 'five slices for two quid...'!

Now our local butcher has closed, we're bereft..:0(
