Warning, nearly lost a baby poot :(
« on: June 18, 2011, 19:46 »
The chicks are just over 3 weeks now and are venturing a bit further from Star, she's also taking them into the wilder parts of the garden too.  One of the wild parts being round the pond.

Disaster happened, one fell in :(  I could hear the panic chirp and at first thought it had been left behind in the run.  Don't ask me why but I opened the window and looked straight down into the pond and there it was, paddling for it's life :(  OH ran out to get it, it didn't look good :( it was in shock, very cold and shaking uncontrollably :(

We brought it in, give it a gentle rub then a warm blow dry and I popped it down my top.  I could feel it shaking :( so out it came for another warm dry then back in again after a while it gave a few chirps, settled and chirped some more.

It spent a bit longer in my top before I took it out to check it over.  It started calling for mum and had a poo so I reckoned it was time to rejoin the family.

Baby poot now running around happily with all the others :D

Weld mesh over the pond, don't want that to happen again.
May this day be blessed with gifts, understanding and friends.  Merlin 2001-2012 Pandora 2001-2013 xxx

A lucky escape and an interesting resusitation technique too!

No Hillfooter.  Don't even think about falling in the pond.  ::)

That sounds like the perfect resuscitation technique for a small, cold animal.  Exactly the right temperature and easy to monitor its progress.  Good thinking Evie.

It's not just baby poots I have to watch out for, daughter no 3 has just arrived saying there's a hedgehog in the garden.  I was bit concerned because it daytime so went out to see what was going on and found one wet baby hog covered in pond weed

Much as I want to help it, there's no way that's going down my top ;)

hi we had a baby sparrow fall in the water butt the other day, again gave it a blow dry and put it under the lamp for a while, never thought of down the top ! flew away when I took it outside so should be ok the water butt is also now covered in wire mesh :D

We lost a brood of swallows recently after a cold rainy couple of days.  Probably the parents were unable to find enough insects to feed them at this critical stage of development.  Found them dead below the nest in my feed barn.  The parent birds are still nesting so they are obviously starting a new brood or some survived.

Baby Splash is non the worse for it's adventure but Star has turned into Godzilla ::) went to move a dopey straggler who'd been so busy excavating the Bliss in the big run it hadn't noticed the family had moved on, lots of panic chirping, running up and down and trying to get through the wire ensued.  I picked it up to return to distressed mum and got pecked and flapped at for my trouble   Star's a very good mum :tongue2:

The little hedgehog was fine although it was photographed to within an inch of it's life and everyone had to go and admire it, wee Evie insisted
