Baytril egg withdrawal period - anyone know?
« on: November 13, 2009, 19:15 »
For the first time in 12 years I've actually visited a vet (I've been saving up) and been prescribed antibiotics which I'm pleased to say sorted the problem.  Now I need to know how long after finishing the course do I have to discard the eggs for.  My vet didn't seem to know and suggested 6 weeks which sounds a bit too cautious to me.

Regards

i have only taken eggs of the menu for 14 days its a horrible thing to do , having to chuck perfectly good eggs but its not worth risking anything .

If I remember vets should advise 4 weeks, this is evidence based ;) They are dutybound to recommend 4 weeks. I have only withdrawn for 2 weeks, and then I am sure I have got eggs mixed up! :D

7 days should be ample.

Vets have to make it up as they go along.  Baytril is not licenced for poultry so the "tests" have not been done.

The half-life of Baytril is measured in hours rather than days which means it is quite quickly removed from the body.

The risk of eating eggs with a baytril residue in them is not because of any danger to humans but rather that small doses of the antibiotic in the human gut could cause resistance to the antibiotic to be created in human gut bacteria so gradually making baytril less effective at fighting infections in general.

Thanks everyone for the replies.  When I expressed surprise at the the 6 weeks my vet did say that it was unlikely to be an issue after 7 days which was about the time I had in mind so I'll probably go with that.

Thanks again

There have been tests, most of the active ingredient is removed after 6 days,(from the albumen) another trial a little longer.
Baytril is licensed for poultry but not now in the states, FDA removed its license, I think 2005. I wouldn't be suprised if the EU does the same in the next couple of years.

My vet told me a month, but I started having them myself after 14 days as I couldn't bear to keep throwing them away. I didn't let anyone else have them, though
