hen and cockerel attacking?
« on: June 12, 2009, 15:49 »
The wierdest thing just happened. I was in the pen with 5 of my brahmas ( 4 hens and 1 cockerel) anf i was throwing corn down for them, my rhode island red (who is at the top of the pecking order out of my 16 other hens) slipped in the gate and started eating the corn right infront of my cockerel, he was NOT happy about this so he started pawing at the ground and opening his mouth a lot. I decided he might attack her like he had the last hen who had gotten in, so i opened the gate and she waddled out, but before i could shut it he charged out. She completally ignored him and started preening and pecking around, so he started stamping around her in a circle, opening his beack really wide! they then looked at each other and then the feathers around their necks puffed up...alot! they both jumped up in the air and slammed into each other, they did this about 3 times then i stuck my leg  in between them, their feathers stayed puffed up and they tryed to get each other, after a while i put it down and was about to pick him up but before i could, they attacked each other again. I then managed to pick the cockerel up, so the rhode island hen walked of. both of them were fine, but i thought it was pretty strange..........sorry for the long post bit its just really strange....well i think it is....what do you think?
I live with my black brahma cockerel Trophamus and all my other chooks :)
