Potatoes in pots...
« on: January 11, 2021, 10:29 »
I am thinking about growing a few potatoes in pots this year. I grow plenty on the plot, in the ground but thought I would try a couple of pots at home. What size pot would you recommend? I have some 35ltr and 50ltr buckets. The 50s seem a bit big to me, but I have no experience. I have seen people grow them in both sizes but don't seem to advocate one over the other.

I need more space...

I only used 30L ones last year and they're the best size for me, simply because the bigger pots were too heavy to empty/move ....

I think smaller is better. I use 15l pots and put a single seed spud 2” from bottom of each (actually half as I buy big ones and split once they’ve chatted). Easy to move in event of frost and you can space them out once they get big so they get more light. Easier to harvest too as you just upend the whole pot and have enough for a couple of days.

Thanks folks, I think I will try a couple of the 30l pots I have this year and see how it goes. I have not grown potatoes in pots before, just goes to show even this old bloke can try something new...

One tip I saw on YouTube is putting the bottom 6 inches of the pot in soil. Increases yield apparently as does wilted comfrey

Do you use multi purpose compost? Or does it need something richer?

I use mpc with either some added chicken pellets or bfb
