how many eggs?
« on: February 14, 2013, 15:43 »
any body know roughly how many bantam eggs equate to normal eggs?  I'm wanting to do some baking as my girls have been busy but haven't baked with bantam eggs before and recipes all assume standard sized eggs! i'm thinking maybe 3 bantam to two standard?

That seems to be what people do Crowndale.  But if I am making a victoria sponge say, I weigh the eggs, then use the same amount of flour, sugar etc.

but otherwise, yes, 3 to 2 roughly.

You could do with weighing your bantie eggs really, as they're likely to need either 2 for 1 standard large or 3 for 2 depending on the size...

I'd go for weighing as well - I "think" most recipes are based on medium eggs or size 3 if it's an older book (I find medium a little on the small size for a traditional 4 - 4 - 4 & 2 recipe) - there's a guide to eggs sizes and weights is here (although this is weights in the shell not out of it!):

I just look and if it looks enough, that'll do

But 2 bantam eggs is about 1 normal egg, maybe

I still like Bantam eggs though, the original fast food :) :) :) :) :)

I'm waiting for my Bantams to lay - think they are about, I think they must be about 5-6 months old now - the oldest of the 3 is just starting to think about growing some proper wattles!

thanks.  i weighed them and they are around 1.25 ounces each and have gone on the basis of 3 for 2, its not quite accurate but the proper maths was too complicated!!  but the cakes came out ok at that ratio so its all good!
