Title: Hen is laying shell only, how to fix?
Post by: SamT on August 02, 2019, 09:38
Hi, one of my chooks is having issues laying eggs at the moment, shes only about 18 months old and we don't usually see this happening to chooks until they get to about 3 and start to fizzle out from egg laying (they are hybrids).
She seems to only be laying shell a lot of the time, there is occassionally a bit of egg that comes out with it but mainly just shell.  Shes been doing this on and off for the last few weeks, she will lay a couple of eggs that have slightly thin shells, then for a couple of days we will find just shell, and we can see when shes about to lay shell as shes not a happy chick at all.  Shes got plenty of oyster shell to eat and she eats her pellets each morning when she comes out.  Is there anything I can do to stop the shell only process as I hate to see her like this?

Add greens, cabbage or free range on grass.
She might be finishing early.
Are her eyes clear/ chest sound good?
