Title: Can I rotavate grass into the soil on my allotment?
Post by: km76 on April 20, 2012, 21:05
Am completley new to allotments! A couple of months ago I was allocated a plot (after 5 years on waiting list) that has not been tended for years and years (and years!!) and is grass and brambles! I have only just managed to uncover the shed!! Have been told this week I must cultivate in 21 days or it will be given to someone else. I have managed a small area by hand, removing the grass and turning the soil over but I now need a slightly quicker fix to get the ground sorted. Am thinking of hiring rotavator. Can I just rotavate the grass into the soil or will that turn into a disaster?
Thanks!

The grass could well be couch grass and if it is, rotavating it would be an unmitigated disaster. You'd be replanting the roots, a hundred fold.

You might consider glyphosate,  but the current weather is not conducive to the doing this.
