advice needed please
« on: September 01, 2011, 16:11 »
Hello  I have jsut joined the forum after a year using the site which i have found BRILLIANT as a newbie veggie gardener.
I need advice please about my runner beans? They have grown profusely, but they are all leaves and very few beans. I have topped the ends as best I can but still not getting many.
I am only getting 1/2  a dozen a day, what am i doing wrong?
Any help would be gratfully received.
Many thanks

There are several reasons for not getting any pods forming.  Have you been keeping the compost moist?
Cheese makes everything better.

yes loads but I have to admit they are in full sun. I live in the middle of france and weve had temps up as high as 37 degrees. Would this not have burnt the leaves before now though?

I tried to grow them in Greece without success because of the heat. You could try sowing them either earlier or later so that they miss the worst of the heat.

Please will you edit your profile to show your location (click on your username) as it can be crucial when answering posts, as climate makes sooo much difference to growth ;)

If your climate is hot and dry that may well be the problem.  Someone in a previous post said to grow white or pink flowering varieties as it helps in these conditions.

I agree with the other mods. Most bean plants do prefer slightly cooler weather, so in your case I'd grow runner beans in part shade. They'll still do well but won't suffer from full sun heat. 37C is way too high for beans. 30C in the shade is much better.
