Onions and shallots on their last roots...
« on: July 06, 2011, 16:05 »
As it was such a dry spring, many onions and shallots just refused to budge much more than keep alive. They were all sets.

I rescued some, and planted them in a safe place, and they at least have some greenery on them, but they're about 4" high, and don't really want to do much now.

Is it worth putting them to one side for a retry next year, or out of their misery?

This has never happened before, and I'd be interested to know what others do under the circumstances.

I doubt they will work next year.  I'd let them grow as long as you want them to, and then perhaps use them more as spring onions if you've got no bulb on them.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

they will run straight to seed next year, so not worth saving, sorry!
as Yorkie says use what you can -  if they're worth it

Thanks folks, I feared as much, but there's always half a chance of getting something out of very little on rare occasions...

I was thinking the same as mum but she posted before I did.

One of our local shops is selling this years onion sets at a very silly price. They're spring planting ones. I'm guessing they aren't worth buying either.

Last year I had some spare onion sets and planted them very close to deliberately get small onions for pickling - they were great. Perhaps you could pickle them if you have enough and they really are small?

That's a good idea Big, but they really are having a hard time now.

I think they're for the heap unfortunately, as they're weedy and thin!

More luck next year of course - some you win...

Not just me then? My onions don't appear to have grown for weeks, neither has the garlic, though the shallots don't look too bad.....

Mine were planted just after the snow (once the ground had thawed a bit) Next year, I'm going to plant spring sets as well, and maybe some seeds. Even when I plant 300 onions, it's not enough

I did move them this year, as the garlic had been in the same place 2 years running - it did really well up the other end too... it might go back there in a year or two...

"Even when I plant 300 onions, it's not enough"

That sounds about right Beklet!

No point in faffing around with one packet of seed/sets...;0)

I'll copy you next year - they'll do much better I'm sure!
