Where are my frogs?
« on: February 28, 2014, 19:49 »
Seeing as it has been so warm all this winter I have expected my frogs to turn up early this year.  No sign so far

I have looked in my little book and realize that I have been "clocking them in" for 14 years now.  If they are going to turn up late, I will have to think about deducting their pay. :D

Typically they turn up between 22nd-25th Feb without fail.  Occasionally as late as 10th March, but that was because of a frozen pond in 2005.

I wonder if that nasty frog virus has got them at last, or whether they know something we don't about an impending cold snap and they are still in bed?
Sometimes my plants grow despite, not because of, what I do to them.

Just heard on some global news today that there's some sort of disease/problem killing off birds around Spain, and now this same problem is affecting frogs in Ireland and likely surrounding areas. I don't know what the problem is, but it's spreading and killing off a lot of creatures. So, you might not see your croakers this year.

Or maybe, as much of Berkshire has been under water recently, like a lot of other places, my frogs have turned up their noses at my tiny little pond and are happily playing in the enormous lake that covers the fields at  the bottom of our lane. :D

That's a very nasty disease, Aunty. I love my froggies here and hope they don't ever contact that.

 Hi Gremlin,
Any sign of the frogs ?? No sign of any spawn in the ponds yet on our allotments. Also we have a major Toad migration route close by and I've yet to see one this year  :(

I'm in North Hampshire, so not far away Gremlin & ours have just started to lay in the last day. No real croaking chorus like normal though.

We have had spawn up the allotment for a week or so, and they just started in mine yesterday though they have been sloshing around and singing there for a while.  But it is quite a deep/cold pond.  Maybe if you are near floods they got washed away.  Whatever you do don't be tempted to import frogspawn just in case there is disease around.

I found a frog in my garden last week nearly spiked him with a rake he was an extremely slippery little fellow. I put him in a washing up bowl covered with a tea towel & took him to a friends pond I hope it was happy :-)

I wish the human race would have more compassion/empathy for our fellow creatures :-)

Unfortunately a lot of our frogs seem to end up squished on the road  :(

However when I was out walking the dog yesterday, two frogs were in a loving embrace by the path and everyone who went past raised a slightly smutty smile  :D
