Timber Glue
« on: October 11, 2008, 10:10 »
Hello,

I'm making a cover for my plants with a wooden base that will sit on the soil.

To maximise use of the area, there are to be a lot of corners in this structure and so to help strengthen the unit, as well as screwing the corners with brackets, I was thinking to glue the wood together first with the B&Q equivalent of No Nails.

Does anyone know whether anything in the glue is likely to seep into the soil and worry the vegetables? I don't want to contaminate them but didn't know how the glues dries - whether it is solid and safe perhaps?

Thanks for your help!

I don't think it will hold anyway most no nails are water based and prolonged damp destroys the bond, try some thing like evostick exterior wood glue waterproof and resin based. There are some no nails products that are solvent based these may hold up better.  :)

External PVA's will probably do just as well, and loads cheaper too ! :)

Yep PVA will do nicely I got a tub of builders PVA about 10 years ago, still going strong and always comes in handy.

Thanks, Yes, weather permitting, I've got my spade at the ready
 :)
Just a thought on your construction, what about dowelling the joints in addition. This can make a really strong frame? 8)

Hello!

This is my first visit back to the site since making my frames so I didn't read your reply about dowelling until after the event - not that I know what that means anyway!

The frame isn't very sturdy but it will serve its purpose. For a while anyway!

Hope you're all having a great weekend!
