Growveg.com planner HELP, please
« on: April 07, 2014, 10:20 »
I am new to veggie growing, so trying out growveg.com which has helped me plan what and where to plant BUT on the plant list, which shows you when you're sowing, planting and harvesting (represented by coloured bars) some of them are greyed, and I can't figure out why.  I have emailed them, but thought someone may already know on here.
Hoping someone can help, thanks in advance
Clare

I've never used a planning programme like that, so can't help you with your question - sorry. I just use a notebook where each year I draw my raised bed plot and write what I am growing on each bed so I know where I am going with rotating them, and also where in each bed I want to sow what. Sowing, planting and harvesting depends so much on your locality, the current season and your local weather, soil type, seed varieties (early, mid-season or late),  that it is so much easier to go by your instincts along with what other forum members are doing, especially in your area.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

I was only kidding hence the smiley

I was using a planner as i'm a first timer with know knowledge of growing veg at all, thought it would help me, and I do like to have my stuff saved so I can printout, change it print out again without having to redraw it all, but I am beginning to think drawing it a hundred times maybe easier!!

I think it has something to do with their frost calculator, but according to them I don't have a long enough season to grow cabbage, sprouts, broccoli even carrots - really?????

I've changed to sow/plant/harvest times of many of them to what they say on the packets, as the defaults on some were off, for the type I am planting

I have the shape of my plots drawn out (on an excel spread sheet).

I can print out a new plan each year and pencil on the crop positions.  If the crop plans change I rub them out with an eraser and reposition them - so effective I might patent it  :nowink:

I wonder if all the Lincolnshire farmers know their brassicas are doomed

good links thanks.  Yes according to my Growveg chart, they will have nothing to harvest!

There reply 'Thanks for getting in contact. The plants which are showing greyed out bars have specific 'in-ground dates'. When you set in-ground dates for a plant, your Plant List will show darker lines for the months when your plant is actually growing in the ground, with the dimmed parts of the lines indicating the general recommended sowing, planting and harvesting times if they extend beyond the in-ground dates. It's worth checking that your in-ground dates correspond with the recommended growing and harvesting periods on the Plant List.'

Which makes sense but (my reply) 'Ok, but for example my purple sprouting broccoli is showing sow apr-may in bold but then all of the harvesting is greyed out, there are no bold harvesting. I have entered the dates from the seeds. Surely there should be some bold harvesting'

Am I just missing the point today, I do have the little people at home so concentration isn't at its best

I think a number of people have found that piece of software less than adequate.
Do you have it on a free trial ?

This is my first year of growing, and all I've done is go through all the seeds I've amassed, read the packets, and entered seeds, sowing and harvesting times on a spreadsheet.

I'm clearly doomed - I've been far too simplistic.

Oh yes free trial!

Spreadsheet, now you see I've not used them since college and now wouldn't know how to start, But i think that would give me exactly what im after.  I just want a line chart or something to show me when to plant, when to harvest, so i know whats what.

Malc what to u use?

That's the way I do it too Malc.  I use excel.
