HELP INJURED CHICKEN
« on: May 05, 2012, 17:32 »
A Fox got our little pekin bantam this morning, we gave chase and the fox dropped her minus her back feathers and a few bite marks (but thank goodness not loads of blood).  We have her indoors now after treating wounds with purple spray and wound powder, and really having to hand feed her.  Main problem is obviously shock and although she can stand she will not do so readily or walk - leg is not broken but think she must be in pain from being grabbed.  Can anyone suggest anything we can do to help her just want to give her a fighting chance.  Can you give them painkillers like baby asprin or is that dangerous.  Obviously want to do the best for her.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Sorry to hear this, well done to have got her back alive, I would think that if the fox pierced the skin you will need to look out for infection, not sure how you can assist with shock symptoms but am sure someone more experienced will advise soon, hope your hen is on the mend soon

That's drreadful JMF.  It might be a good idea to get her checked over by a vet if you think she could stand the travelling.  In the meantime, try to coax her to eat and drink, give her some ACV in her water and some poultry spice mixed in her food which may help.  Any cuts spray/dab with gentian purple spray which is an antiseptic too and if you keep her in the house overnight make sure that she doesn't get too hot.  I hope she's better in the morning.

Thank you for your response so far - She has survived the night but has now stopped eating and drinking still indoors in pet carrier and bless her she has just laid an egg.  Cannot get her to a vet as it will be too stressful for her - wounds are dealt with purple spray and wound powder - just hope she makes it.

I've used asprin in sugarwater and it seems to help. If she's not drinking, try a drop into the side of her beak.  Also used Ibuprofen gel on unbroken skin.
