Ground cover
« on: April 22, 2014, 05:42 »
I have 2 large borders, fed up with weeding.
Can anyone suggest any plants for ground cover.
And maybe some evergreens.
Thanks.

Mint, lemon balm.  Taken over weeds and the border without any effort on your part.  Dies down in winter for you to weed.  Spreads over the lawn so cutting grass smells lovely. :D

A couple of plants of campanula portenschlagiana will run through the border in no time

or how about Alpine Strawberries?

I have a low-growing variety of Berberis that has white flowers in summer and red berries in autumn. It throws out long branches that nicely root as they go or you can peg them down to cover the area you want. Another one is Vinca - major and minor - see RHS website. Also varieties of Lamium (Dead Nettle). All are evergreen and flower, but are not invasive.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Euonymus or cotoneaster horizontalis for shrubs.  Geraniums are good too - some spread more/faster than others.

Lily of the valley will spread as well; I had a terrible time getting rid of them.

My preference is any of the ground phloxes, hens and chickens cacti, thymes, candytuft, periwinkle.

Agree with all the above suggestions.  Another one is London Pride (sorry, I don't know the Latin name) - provides cover all year as the leaves are evergreen, and in the spring it sends up long stems with tiny delicate pinkish white flowers on.  In the same vein, Ajuga repens is a good one (both work around here, which is why I notice them).  :)
