shallots and onions from sets
« on: March 11, 2007, 19:27 »
I've planted some of my shallot sets today - phew, after a whole day on the plot, digging, composting, raking , breaking ground, I'm exhausted.

The question is, is it a little too early to plant my onion sets? Are we going to have another frost do you think? And should I stagger my planting so that I don't get an embarrassment of riches all at once? Afriend said to me that they will all grow at different rates, so I might as well plant them all at once...
trying to be organic...

Get 'em all in TJ.

Yes they all get ready at once but you dry them and they will keep for many months.

Agree with WG.  I'm still eating the onions I dried last year and they are in perfect condition.
Cheese makes everything better.

Planted the remainder of my onion sets yesterday.  The sets I planted in Feb are just starting to produce green shoots now, as are the shallots.
Gardening organically on chalky, stony soil.

I planted our sets yesterday. They are our first ever thing to go in the ground on our plot. We also put our broadbeans in and some strawberry plants that the lady on the plot next door gave us.

Naw, I reckon your onions are safe enough.  Aggy is still wading through a heap of smoked garlic which should satisfy her allium cravings.
