Chelsea chop on clematis?
« on: May 28, 2012, 23:13 »
I have a lovely clematis flowering now - if I give it a chop now, will that make for more flowers later on?

Depends what kind it is. Do you know what kind it is? Montana? See here* for detailed information. :)

* Sorry I don't have time to type it all out for you just now. ;)

As, Argyllie said it depends what sort of clematis it is.

Some give flowers in spring and summer and then give a second flush of flowers in the Autumn or late Summer. If you Chelsea Chop these you may not get the second lot of flowers.

I cut off the flower heads when they are looking a bit raggy to tidy up the plant but do be careful if you do a Chelsea chop that you don't kill off the plant.

I did that on a rampant montana and it took a couple of years for it to recover :(

I have had to cut back clematis at the wrong time of the year because of a collapse of the support but not right back to the ground. I think it might be too much of a shock.
