Tiny frog
« on: October 30, 2024, 16:39 »
Found a tiny frog about 1cm long in my front garden this morning, about 100 metres away from any pond or ditch. I'm not a nature fanatic but less than 2 or 3 cms at this time of the year seems totally wrong. Is it unusual for frogs so small to be around in late autumn?

Do you have any native tree frogs? It could be one of those.
The other alternative is it's a very young toad.

No tree frogs here as far as I'm aware and as it was jumping, I doubt it was a toad

You do find tadpoles in a wildlife pond into autumn.  I looked it up when I saw them in my pond and it is natural.  They don’t all mature at the same time and some even over winter as tadpoles and mature the next spring. It might be the mild autumn has triggered it into adulthood.

I don’t know if your tiny frog will make it, but it is just nature’s way of spreading the bet on some surviving.

Thanks for that Newshoot. I think you're probably spot on with that explanation. Now I'm just hoping that it survives winter cold
