i have some swede in and the root is above the ground by 3 inches do i bank these up to protect it or is this usual

I agree, don't bother banking.  My green growth is about 18inches high - highest I've ever seen them, so I'm hoping by Christmas they'll be ok - I don't want to find out its all top and now bottom

They should be fine, after all, the main root is firmly in the soil, getting the grub!

Ours are the same, some of them are about 5" across, and I've been instructed by Mrs G to leave them a while longer.

She's a hard woman is Mrs Growster...
