What to grow on a bank in full sun?
« on: February 14, 2011, 22:05 »
I have a slight bank at the back of my plot, originally i was going to put the compost bin, water butt etc there but its in full sun and theres a 6 foot fence behind so good for support as it can be a wind tunnel.

However ive had a bit of a weed and under the rubbish and stones the soil is actually quite good compared to the clay everywhere else.  It seems a shame to waste what could be a feature.  Ive got places (well i will have if i get on and do it!) for beans and peas etc so need some ideas for other veg or fruit that like a bank to grow along but need full sun pretty much all day long.

How about some butternut squash? They'll scramble all over it and like warmth

I think that's a good idea - it would help with ripening no end.  ;)

Depending on how much rain / sun we get this year it might be a good site for onions perhaps?

I hadnt thought about sweetcorn (im a newbie it scares me  ) it might be worth a try though.  Would squash not dry out too quickly?  I had a butternut last year with my marrows and literally got 1 squash off it despite copious daily drenchings i will look into it though thanks.

Ive no idea about onions ive stayed away from them as i dont really eat many and they are so cheap in shops with a tiny plot they seem pointless

Strawberries. Or there was a technique used in gardens years ago where banks were created to tilt ground towards what sun there was in early spring just to ensure early salad crops -- so that could be worth a try. If really warm then in addition to courgette, squash etc try outdoor melons. or early potatoes.

I would go with a grape vine or two personally.

Mediterranean herbs
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Grapes :)

Grapes... Just think. Laying back on the bank in the summer sun picking fresh grapes straight from the vine.

There's lovely.  ;)

Strawberries.

That was my first thought as they love a slope in full sun :D :D

Although sweetcorn does sound like a good option :)

My initial thought was 'tanned'. The thought of laying in the sun on a bank sounds fab. :D

But mediterranean herbs sounds a good idea. And the squashes. ;)

It would need plenty of water, but do you think melons would like a fill sun slope?
