nothing showing yet :(
« on: May 01, 2013, 22:30 »
Around 4 weeks ago I put 20 rasperry canes in.
Around 3 weeks ago I put my spuds in.
Around 2 weeks ago I directly sowed carrots, Broc and parsnip.

I have nothing showing at all yet :(

My onion sets are on their way, as are the 2 apple trees I planted months ago.

Am i being to impatient?

p.s. i am in south wales.

Don't get disheartened. The soil is still cooler than normal for this time of year due to the extra cold winter.

The raspberry canes will take time to wake up. Scratch the surface of some wood on one and if it's green its still alive.

Did you chit the spuds? If not, I'm nor surprised. If you did, I bet they're just below the surface. Have a furtle around in the ground gently to look for growth.

Carrots, broc and parsnips will all take longer to germinate in this cooler weather. Parsnips are slow always.

Chitted spuds yes. They are showing in my bags, but not on the plot.

I will scratch the canes next time I go down. Will not be happy if they are dead.

Is there anything I can do to aid germination?

My first lot of carrots I sowed are only just coming through now, two and a half weeks after sowing. Brassica's directly sown came through about two weeks after sowing. Potatoes had not come through after three weeks. I'd say give it some more time, everything seems to be taking forever to get going this year, even here in the south of England the landscape still looks like early March with only a fraction of the trees in leaf, and daffodils still in bloom.

Yo could warm the soil with some fleece.

Spuds in bags will start quicker now that things have warmed up (relatively) as the sun can warm them from the sides as well as the top, unlike at the plot where only the top of the soil gets the sunshine.

Some life is now starting to show with my seeds and spuds.

Unfortunatly so are some small weeds, and its hard to determine what is what at the moment. GRRRR.

My raspberries are showing no life whatsoever. Not very happy with them at all. I cant see them taking, so will be going back to the garden centre for a refund.

If you sow in rows, the weed seedlings tend to be the randomly placed ones. You can then see if any that look like that are in with your veg seedlings and hoik them out carefully by hand. It is a faff, but well worth it in the long run.

Next time around you will be able to identify your veg seedlings more confidently, as each is very distinctive.

I had the same problem with the same crops and then, bam!

They are all up.

Very happy camper :)
When weeding, the best way to know if its a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull it.

If it comes out easy, it was a valuable plant !
